Children’s Dentistry

Has your child ‘cut’ their first tooth? Dr Gerard Tang Dental Surgery uses gentle dental practices to care for your child’s oral health…

Children’s teeth are very precious.  Even though they eventually fall out to make way for adult teeth they are still crucial in establishing the future health of your child’s mouth. Obviously they require a gentle dental approach. That is why at our Eastwood surgery we offer children’s dentistry treatment options to help your child achieve their best smile with minimal stress. Our professional check-ups can not only assess and maintain the health of your child but we will work hard to create a warm welcoming environment in which your child feels safe and confident.

Patients as young as seven can benefit from a gentle dental check-up…

Many patients ask us when is the best time to bring their children to visit our surgery for their first check-up. We suggest that at age four or five, or when their first tooth is cut, is the perfect time to come and introduce your child to one of our experienced dentists. We are always happy to meet a new face and we stress the importance of establishing healthy relationships with younger patients so that they grow up trusting in gentle dental care. This is vital, not least because studies have shown that children are more inclined to look after their teeth if they lack dentophobia (fear of the dentist) from a young age.

Baby teeth are susceptible to the same oral health problems as adult teeth…

Babies and toddlers are at risk of developing decay and oral health problems in the same manner as older children, teenagers and adults. Even though baby teeth do not erupt until around the age of one, it is crucially important to introduce your infant to gentle dental care for the sake of their oral development. Babies are actually born with all of their teeth but they lie dormant under the gum line until they are ready to surface. Once the teeth break through the gum line, baby teeth begin to shape the mouth in preparation for the adult teeth. This influences your child’s development of proper communicative and oral abilities such as eating, speaking, giggling, drinking and smiling. This makes the influence of proper care at a young age all the more evident.

At Dr Gerard Tang Dental Surgery, we offer children fissure sealants to help protect their teeth from further decay…

If your child does experience some early-onset tooth decay, it is very important to bring them to our surgery to receive appropriate preventive treatment. We offer children with tooth decay sealants to prevent the incipient decay from further damaging their teeth. Our dentists are committed to doing this with gentle dental practices. Sealants are designed to prevent bacteria from further damaging pits and fissures in the molar teeth. Pits and fissures are grooves in the teeth that catch and attract plaque easily. Moreover, they are easily missed due to ineffective brushing. These sealants are safe to use on children’s teeth and will last well until their adult teeth are ready to surface. This long-term benefit is greater incentive to bring your children in for an early inspection of their teeth and gums.
